Men’s Soccer advances to NCAA Tournament

The Kansas City Roos men’s soccer team are Summit League tournament champions.
Winning one of the 22 NCAA Division 1 conferences grants a team an automatic bid to the national tournament. The Roos did just that, qualifying for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008.
To get the automatic bid, the Roos had to beat Denver. Going into the match, the Pioneers were ranked fourth in the nation. The match took place last Saturday, Nov. 16. Kansas City found itself down early in the match...

Roos Men’s Soccer to appear in conference championship game

The Kansas City Roos men’s soccer team has advanced to the Summit League Championship match.
On Saturday, the Roos took on Oral Roberts in what was essentially a play-in game for the final tournament spot.
While the Golden Eagles led in a number of statistics, including total shots, corner kicks, and possession time, the Roos relentless play made sure Kansas City came out on top.  After Oral Roberts opened the scoring almost 10 minutes into the game, freshman defender Wesley Cribb found th...

Men’s Soccer dethrones No. 3 Denver

For the first time since 2008, the Kansas City Roos men’s soccer team defeated a top 25 opponent.
On Saturday night, the Roos took on the Denver Pioneers.
The game had similarities to the 2023 Summit League Men’s Soccer Semifinals, where Denver entered ranked but Kansas City pulled off the upset.  Unlike the last meeting between these two, regulation did not result in a draw. The only goal scored in the game was just before the clock struck 14 minutes by junior forward Elie Kisoka.

Kansas City basketball is coming to local TV.
In a press release on Thursday, the athletic department announced a new partnership with Kansas City’s NBC affiliate, KSHB 41.
This partnership includes eight basketball broadcasts and marks the first time Kansas City basketball will be broadcasted on a local station since the 2017-2018 season.  “Bringing Kansas City men’s and women’s basketball games to local TV provides elevated visibility,” Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics, Dr. Brandon...

Opinion: An evaluation of UMKC’s climate action plan

With the earth’s climate rapidly changing, how has UMKC committed to mitigating its carbon footprint?
Madison Twite, an officer with the Student Environmental Coalition, does not see a strong effort.
Many universities have dedicated Climate Action Plans (CAPs) to lay out exactly what actions the institution will take to help mitigate its carbon footprint.    However, UMKC does not have a direct CAP document accessible. Instead, plans for sustainability on campus are included in the univers...

Opinion: The Real Story of the Women’s Basketball Season

Free throws are a part of any basketball game. But what happens when the disparity between teams is unbelievably large?
That question was answered this season with Kansas City’s women’s basketball team.
During the season, the Roos averaged 17.3 free throw attempts per game. On the other hand, opponents averaged 23.8.   While 6.5 free throws per game isn’t necessarily game-breaking, that differential shot up exponentially in the final five games of the season.
  During that stretch- four gam...

The Kansas City Roos Eliminated in the First Round Against the Omaha Mavericks

The Kansas City Roos could not break the streak of losing in the first round.

A collapse. That’s really the only term that can be used to describe the end of this season.

Ending the regular season on a five-game skid, then losing to the 10-seeded Omaha Mavericks in the first round of the Summit League Championship Tournament was certainly not the plan for Head Coach Marvin Menzies entering the season.

This game was a disappointment. From start to finish, Omaha had the lead. The Mavericks shot

Summit League Men’s Basketball Tournament Preview

However, it’s Summit League Championship Tournament time, and the Roos’ first matchup looks to be favorable.

Kansas City’s first-round face-off is against the Omaha Mavericks, a team the Roos swept earlier this season. The first match, in Omaha on Dec. 31, ended in a 75-59 victory. The second game, at home on Jan. 26, ended in a heart-stopping 64-61 victory.

The Mavericks did not have a great season, only winning eight of 30 games. With only four in-conference victories, Omaha finished last in

Men’s Basketball Week in Review: Final Home Stretch

The Kansas City Roos men’s basketball team played their final games in the Swinney Recreation Center for the 2022-2023 basketball season. Unfortunately, they did not close it out on a high note.

Last week, the Roos lost both games. They lost to the North Dakota State Bisons 58-69. Then, they played the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Kansas City lost this battle 73-81.

The story of the week was, again, three-point shooting. Kansas City only shot 27.3% from behind the arc versus the Bison. Against

Men’s Basketball Midseason Review

After five months of college basketball, the new-look Kansas City Roos had an up-and-down performance in and out of conference play. However, there are many areas that need to be worked on to become true contenders.

In the 13 games prior to conference play, the Roos went 4-9.

In an early statement win, the Roos stomped the Toledo Rockets 83-71. Toledo led the game 38-33 at halftime, but Kansas City secured the win with 50 points in the second half. The Rockets have gone 11-4 since this game an
